A joint compound drying log documents conditions and elapsed time for each coat; it does not turn a schedule into proof that the material is dry. Compound type, thickness, temperature, humidity, ventilation, substrate, and manufacturer instructions all affect the handoff to sanding, another coat, texture, primer, or paint.

This field record supplements the approved products, specifications, manufacturer data, safety plan, and current Gypsum Association guidance. The responsible finishing and quality-control parties must decide how dryness is verified for the actual system.

Divide the project into environmental zones

One building reading can hide different conditions in a restroom, exterior room, stair, high bay, mechanical space, or recently poured floor area. Assign zone IDs and record floor, rooms, enclosure state, HVAC status, temporary heat, exterior openings, and known moisture sources.

Understand why a universal 24-hour rule fails

USG says conventional joint compound dries in about 24 hours at 70°F and 70% relative humidity and that higher humidity or lower temperature slows drying. The Gypsum Association's GA-236 chart shows how strongly estimated drying time changes across temperature and humidity combinations. Those references are planning baselines, not permission to apply the next coat over material that has not met the project's release method.

Record airflow without drying one face too aggressively

  • HVAC operating mode, outdoor-air condition, temporary equipment, doors, windows, and exhaust.
  • Direct fan or heater paths and areas shielded by corners, stacked material, or closed rooms.
  • Fuel-fired temporary heat and the moisture or combustion-management plan.
  • Hot, dry drafts that can shorten workability or contribute to edge cracking.
  • Wet or humid zones where each coat needs more time before the next application.

GA-236 cautions against direct heater airflow on wall surfaces and explains that cold, humid, hot, and dry conditions require different precautions. Environmental control should produce stable project conditions, not just the fastest visible surface skin.

Use hold points before downstream work

  1. Before the next coat: prior coat released by the defined method and no cold, damp, soft, dark, or otherwise unresolved areas.
  2. Before sanding: material dry through the required depth and dust-control setup accepted.
  3. Before primer or texture: finish level, repairs, surface condition, dust removal, environment, and manufacturer requirements accepted.
  4. Before paint acceptance: primer, lighting, final decoration, and earlier drying exceptions included in the quality record.

Track exceptions instead of hiding them

Record delayed zones, wet material, frozen or overheated product, retempering or unauthorized water, thick fills, leaks, condensation, power loss, HVAC changes, rapid-dry cracking, contamination, and damage by later trades. Assign the correction, owner, date, retest, and release.

Connect the log to schedule and finish quality

Use room-level readings to sequence crews and protect realistic coat intervals. Preserve the log with product data, wall-type records, finish-level schedule, mockups, inspections, and paint handoff. It helps explain why two rooms completed on the same day may not be ready at the same time.
